Kristin Revere receives Sacred Pregnancy Instructor Certification!

sacred

Sacred Pregnancy is proud to welcome Kristin Revere, the latest addition to its growing list of pregnancy and birthing journey instructors. Kristin is the first instructor to be certified in Michigan. She completed a week-long training in Gore, Va. on March 30.

The first series of classes will be held locally at Baby Beloved inside the Women’s Health Center at 555 Mid Town Street N.E., Ste. 100 in Grand Rapids on Tuesdays from April 16-June 4 from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m.

Please email sacredpregnancygr@gmail.com or call (616) 340-1086 to register or with any questions.

Sacred Pregnancy classes hold space for pregnant women to connect with one another and their pregnancy experiences in meaningful and personal ways. The classes bring back the age-old tradition of women sitting with one another during pregnancy and birth, becoming empowered, witnessing each others’ processes, and being there for one another during an incredibly power-FULL rite of passage…becoming mothers. Mothers-to-be are invited to look deeply at the issues unique to their journey and find a centered, peaceful place to live their pregnancy fully.

The sessions are a special place for pregnant women to gather together for (“Pregnancy Journey” classes) for eight weeks early in their pregnancy journeys and again for (“Birth Journey” classes) four weeks toward the end of their pregnancies. Each week is spent exploring pertinent topics that naturally arise for most women as they walk down their pregnancy paths and encourage deep sharing, exploring art, expression, laughter, honoring and celebration.

Revere is passionate about empowering women to have the birth and pregnancy they desire.

I always enjoyed childbirth itself, but never fully embraced pregnancy until I read ‘Sacred Pregnancy’ when I was pregnant with my son. It transformed the way I viewed this amazing time so much that I decided to become an instructor and bring these feelings of empowerment to other women,” Revere said.

Green Pastures Dairy introduces raw milk delivery locations!

I know many of you have to make the decision on whether or not to join a raw milk cow share due to where you live, and the driving that would need to happen once a week to pick up your milk.

Farms aren’t quite located in the midst of where we run our errands, are they?

Green Pastures, the cow share program out in Coopersville, MI is now setting up locations for milk delivery.

1. Grand Rapids, near Fuller and Franklin, Mondays

2. Ada, near Fulton and 1-96, Mondays

3. Comstock Park/North Side – 2 locations: Ellsmere NE and Division North in Comstock Park, Mondays

4. Muskegon, near Sheridan and MacAtrthur, across from Orchard View High School, Tuesdays

5. Holland, looking for a central location, Tuesdays

6. Jenison, near Cottonwood and Baldwin, Tuesdays

7. Grand Haven/Spring Lake, Tuesdays

8. Cutlerville, near Kalamazoo and M-6, Mondays

So if you’ve thought of joining before, to enjoy the benefits and great taste of farm fresh milk, but needed to find it closer to home, you can contact Betsy at migreenpastures AT gmail.com for information.

EcoBuns new ownership {and a special discount for you!}

EcoBuns, a fantastic cloth diaper and natural baby care store in Holland, MI, just changed ownership and I had the pleasure of chatting with one of them. Here’s what Marissa had to say about EcoBuns:

What excites you about owning a company dedicated to cloth diapers?

Marissa: When I first started cloth diapering I was so confused about it all. It was Kellie, the original owner of EcoBuns, who sat down with me for over an hour and explained all the ins and outs of cloth diapering. If it weren’t for her and having a local store around to give me guidance when I first started, I probably wouldn’t have cloth diapered at all. I love that I can now be that person for other moms!

What customer services are you really passionate about?

Marissa: I am really excited to offer local natural parenting resources to the Holland Area such as babywearing classes, cloth diaper classes, natural birth option classes and more. EcoBuns is really focused on being not only a retail store, but also a resource center for all aspects of natural parenting. We are also now offering on-site diaper repair as well as snap conversions which are all done by one of the new owners.

What can people expect from the new ownership?

Marissa: A commitment to keeping our store fully stocked with the products that our customers love. Customers can expect useful parenting products and essential educational resources all in one place, along with exceptional customer service.

Will there always be knowledgeable staff available to help customers?

Marissa: YES! There are three new owners of EcoBuns: myself, my sister Meghan and our mom Vicki. Meghan and I both currently cloth diaper our kids. Vicki used cloth diapers on us in the 80’s with prefolds, pins and plastic pants, and she now uses the newer, easier version of cloth diapers on her grandkids. We can all help you with any of questions.

You mentioned classes for cloth diapers, what topics do you cover?

Marissa: We hold Buns Bootcamp classes once a month. It’s an hour-long class that covers topics such as reasons to use cloth diapers, styles and options of cloth, washing instructions, do’s and do not’s of cloth, what you can expect from us as your cloth diaper resource and finally, how we can help you get your stash started at little to no cost! You can find all of our current classes and events on our website.

Where are you located, and what are your current hours?

Marissa: EcoBuns is in The Holland Town Center (formally known as the Outlet Mall). We are between Carter’s and Gap Outlet, facing Dutch Village. (super easy to get to!) And we are open Tuesday to Saturday, 10:00am to 8:00pm. Please stop in and check out all that we have to offer!

As a special discount to our GRNL readers, EcoBuns is offering $5.00 off any purchase of $30 or more! Just print out the coupon below and bring it in to the store by the end of March.

Local Fork Fest – October 18th!

The Grand Rapids area has become a vibrant local foodie culture over the last several years with multiple locally owned restaurants opening up and serving locally grown foods. I’ve even had the pleasure of eating at a few of these fabulous places (and will get to see more of them this Saturday as I attend the Taste of MI, a day of fun for foodie bloggers) and I never been disappointed. These chefs really know what they’re doing!

Beyond that we also have many local farms that work to grow healthy and delicious foods, providing them to local residents themselves or supplying our local restaurants.

You can even try them out yourself during the Local First Fork Fest!

West MI Mom’s Sale {pre-shopping pass GIVEAWAY}

west michigan moms saleHave you ever been bummed that you missed out on some great deals for kids stuff – just because you showed up to late? Well, have I got a great giveaway for you! This week we’ve partnered up with West Michigan Mom’s Sale and will be giving away two pairs of pre-shopping passes.

This year it will be at the DeVos Place, September 15th from 9am-3pm.

The West Michigan Mom’s Sale was organized by a group of local moms who wanted to help other moms in the area have a better way to sell and shop for their growing kids. This sale is, without a doubt, the best place for bargain shopper mothers.

I don’t know about you, but I have a definite love/hate relationship with garage sale-ing. I can find great deals and spend a lot less on my kids clothes, but it’s almost not worth it when you factor in the gas it takes to drive around. Over the last couple of years I’ve decided to only hit up neighborhood sales, which helps, but sometimes I still can’t find the right sizes for the right gender. But with a mom-to-mom sale, I’m guaranteed to be able to find what I’m looking for when there are a ton of other moms selling all in one place.

No driving around, no scouring the online garage sale ads, no scoping out the garages while you drive by. You just go to one place and find a multitude of items that you and your family need.

You’ll be able to find gently used baby/children’s clothing (size 0-16), maternity clothing, toys, nursery furniture, and anything else that is baby, child, or maternity related.

What about Halloween costumes, shoes, quilts, burp cloths, puzzles, car seats, Lego’s, and bedroom accessories?

Yes, you can find it ALL at Michigan’s largest Mom-to-Mom Sale.

TWO of our readers will win a PAIR of passes – so you can bring your BFF to help you grab the best deals. And do all of this BEFORE it opens to the public – these passes will get you in the doors a full two hours beforehand.

Local Couple to Swim Lake Michigan for PPD Awareness

post partum depression

Sara and Jeff Tow are working hard this summer to raise awareness of postpartum depression by becoming the first married couple to complete a 50 mile ultra-marathon swim across Lake Michigan this summer on August 15, 2012!

“In August of 2012 (around the 15th – 17th, depending on weather conditions), we’ll be crossing Lake Michigan at its midpoint. Straight across, this is a 50 mile swim… an ultra-marathon swim. With current and wind and the ever-changing, unpredictable weather on the lake, the likelihood is we’ll swim between 55 and 60 miles when we step on the beach in Ludington, Michigan.”

Both Sara and Jeff dealt with perinatal mood disorders after both of their children, they’ve been there – done that. And now they’re trying to inform others about what these mood disorders may look like, because you can’t always tell when you’re in the midst of it.

Types of Perinatal Mood Disorders:

  • Pregnancy or Postpartum Depression
  • Pregnancy or Postpartum Anxiety
  • Pregnancy or Postpartum Obsessive Compulsive Disorder
  • Postpartum Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder
  • Postpartum Psychosis

Read more about the symptoms of each.

“Women [and men] of every culture, age, income level and race can develop perinatal mood and anxiety disorders. Symptoms can appear any time during pregnancy and the first 12 months after childbirth.”

Listening to their stories is heart-wrenching, yet all so real and really hits close to home. So often perinatal mood disorders go undiagnosed or untreated because we really don’t realize what’s going on in our minds, and what symptoms are really connected to them.

Sara’s Story

Jeff’s Story

Make sure you follow Through the Blue on Facebook to keep up to date on their progress and training!

And swimming 50 (yes, FIFTY) miles is hard. Very hard. You can get involved and help make sure they have the equipment they need or send them an encouraging note to let them know how important this swim really is, for everyone who has children. For the health and well-being of our families.

They have two goals for donations made to Through the Blue:

The first is to help agencies/groups who help families with a focus on Perinatal Mood Disorders. The second is to help make this swim a reality by assisting with the expenses required to complete the journey. These two go hand-in-hand.

By helping those who help families, we are making a difference in people’s lives and providing them with the resources they need to get that help. By completing the swim, we are actively raising awareness and drawing attention to this mental illness in a way that has never been done before. Simply put, a successful swim makes for a successful awareness campaign.

This is only the beginning. While the swim may be a one-time event, Through The Blue is preparing to keep the message going beyond this event. We hope that the connections we make today, and those who join Team Tow now, will be partners in the long-term journey of continually raising awareness for this cause that is near and dear to our hearts. We suffered greatly. We don’t want others to suffer.

GR8 Parenting Expo {Sat. May 19}

Tomorrow is the first ever GR8 Parenting Expo at the DeVos Place, held in conjunction with the West Michigan’s Mom to Mom sale.

Parenthood, unfortunately, does not come with a how-to manual. You can find books that tell you how to teach your child to sleep through the night or obey your every command (yeah, right!), but if you are like me it is hard to find the time to read the book. Let’s face it, parents are busy! Whether you have a newborn or a middle schooler, your life revolves around shaping another human being’s life. You want to make the best choices for your family and we want to help you take some of the work out of your job as a parent.

The GR8 Parenting Event is a one day expo that will provide parents in West Michigan the opportunity to check out the resources available in their community. Everything from doulas to local colleges and day camps to daycares will be present to answer questions and share their expertise. Local experts will be leading free classes on baby wearing, how to make homemade baby food, couponing and so much more!“

Not only can you visit different local vendors, they have a full line-up of classes throughout the day. From learning cloth diapering and babywearing with Hopscotch Children’s Store to learning about how food affects your children’s health.

It runs from 9am to 5pm and admission is free!
